Bear Racquet & Swim Club
Building Type:
Office/Warehouse
When White Bear Racquet & Fitness, a leader and innovator in the
Health and Fitness industry, decided that they needed to enhance the
healthful and nurturing environment of the club, it was only natural
that they turned to Solatube International, Inc. to fully daylight
many key areas of the facility. Founded on the principles of total
wellness and earth-conscious, sustainable design, the Founders of White
Bear Racquet & Swim actively apply innovative technologies to their
facility to make it more inviting and enjoyable for their clients while
also demonstrating cost-effective technologies that will help to maintain
the earth for generations to come.
Objective
Integrate Daylight into key areas of the facility to support their
total wellness approach to fitness by providing a more natural
and healthful environment while also demonstrating the club’s
commitment to earth-conscious sustainability by significantly reducing
annual lighting energy requirements, all through the use of natural
daylight.

Solution
Solar Midwest (Solatube
Commercial Premier Dealer), assisted by Luma Sales
(Solatube Lighting Representative Agency in Minnesota
and the Dakotas), was able to develop and install
a Solatube Daylighting System that provides full
daylight coverage to the entry, reception, main
circulation, Ingredients Café, and the 10,000sf
Fitness Center. An integrated photocontrol system
controls the lighting in the daylit areas, ensuring
that the lights are turned off during most of the
daylight hours. The Solatube Daylighting Systems
have reduced White Bear’s electric lighting
load by one half from 115.5 kWh/day to 57.75 kWh/day
or 21,000 kWh/year while also reducing air conditioning
load from reduced electric lamp and ballast heat.
Testimonial
“The Solatubes are
a significant part of a sustainable retrofit renovation
program where daylight allows us to save energy
while also improving the interior environment for
better member and employee wellness. Our goal is
to eliminate the use of fossil fuels completely
by 2010, while increasing awareness in the community
on the benefits of sustainable design practices.”
