Solatube and CE

The European Commission describes the CE marking as a “passport” that allows manufacturers to circulate industrial products freely within the internal market of the EU. The CE marking certifies that the manufacturer’s products have met EU health, safety and environmental requirements that ensure consumer and workplace safety. All manufacturers in the EU and abroad must affix the CE marking to those products covered by the “New Approach” directives to market their products in Europe. Once a product receives the CE marking, it can be marketed throughout the EU without having to undergo further product modification.

IMPORTANCE

CE marking helps to realize the European single market by setting standards that remove technical barriers to trade within the EU, eg compulsory use of national test standards. Solatube International strongly supports European harmonization of Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDD’s) through (EAD) 220021-00-0402, ADOPTED JULY 2015 which specifically certifies TDD’s via the distinguishing part of the kit which has light guidance capability.

CE STANDARDS

The European Organization of Technical Authorities (EOTA) is a non-profit organization which – using the scientific and technological expertise of its Members – develops and adopts European Assessment Documents (EAD).

The EOTA is set up by the Regulation (EU) No 305/2011 and comprises all Technical Assessment Bodies (TABs) designated by the Member States of the European Union and the European Economic Area.

The European Assessment Document (EAD) is the documentation of the methods and criteria accepted in EOTA as being applicable for the assessment of the performance of a construction product in relation to its essential characteristics. The EAD is developed in all cases where the assessment of a construction product is not or not fully covered by a harmonized technical specification

It contains at least:

  • A general description of the construction product and its intended use (Chapter 1 – Scope)
  • The list of essential characteristics relevant for the intended use (Chapter 2)
  • Methods and criteria for assessing the performance of the product (Chapter 2)
  • Principles for the applicable factory production control (Chapter 3 – AVCP)
